Search is on for 10 top patriotic Filipino doctors

Tacloban City (August 4) — Now ongoing is the quest for the Outstanding Filipino Physicians which is aimed at giving recognition to the patriotism of Filipino doctors who opted to stay in the country and serve their countrymen even if it meant turning down lucrative jobs abroad.
The Search which is in support to a national movement to encourage Filipino doctors to stay and serve their countrymen who need them most, is a joint undertaking of the Department of Health, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation and the JCI Senate Philippines.
The Search which has for this year the theme: “Serving and caring for our countrymen are the best works of life,” also hopes to provide a shining example of patriotism worthy for the rest of the Filipinos to emulate.
The quest is open to all natural-born or naturalized Filipino physicians who are at least 41 years old, of good moral character, and whose integrity and dedication to the medical profession led to advancements in the medical field as well as public health and welfare.
TOFP awardees shall be chosen on the strength of their character, integrity, commitment and dedication to the medical profession focusing on the impact of their recent and past achievements that manifest their caring and sharing for their countrymen, instill patriotism by staying in the country in the service to the community particularly to the indigents and for making significant contributions to national development in general, and the public welfare in particular.
Based personality, the nominee must possess Leadership in the Community; Academic achievements; Participation in medical activities without (professional) remuneration; Value to the community where the physician resides; and Awards and citations received.
On service to humanity, the nominee must have ethical conduct leading to practices promoting good health (longer life); and services (free) to the community on the promotion of good health.
The nominee must also have rendered community services as physician thru non-medical organizations. e.g. Rotary, Jaycees, Lions, etc.; and medical services to the indigents in rural areas, urban communities, pro-bono.
The impact of the nominee’s research works to the community aimed at promoting good health and longer life. The emphasis is placed, not on the actual result, but on the length of time spent in the research.
Journals, published or unpublished, must be acknowledged by the Medical Society or the DOH as an original work; peer review, minimum of three (3) may be considered as an accepted compliance.
The nominees must also have exemplary achievements and related acts of heroism during calamities, disasters and medical outbreaks beyond the call of duty in the medical profession; respect of human rights in the practice of medicine; cooperation and coordination with governmental and other medical institutions and NGOs; and efforts done in the advocacy against brain drain in the medical professions by choosing to continuously serve and care for our countrymen notwithstanding the lure of greener pasture overseas.
Interested parties are enjoined to submit their entries and accomplish nomination forms on or before 6:00 p.m. of August 15, 2008 to the TOFP Award 2008 JCI Senate Philippines, Inc., 2nd Floor, JCI Philippines Building, 14 Don Alejandro Roces Ave., Quezon City.
Deadline for submission of nominees is August 15. The winners will receive their citations in awarding rites at the historic Manila Hotel on Sept. 26.
